Pilibhit: Two men suspected of poaching were held by officials of the Pilibhit Tiger Reserve on Sunday. The two are suspected to belong to a larger gang of poachers. Officials suspect the two were part of the group that killed eight tigers here last year.

In January 2015, eight men were held by the Wildlife Control Bureau and the Special Task Force (STF) in Pilibhit on information received from Dalal Mondal, a poacher.

Mondal, a resident of Pilibhit, had been arrested in Nepal and found to possess tiger skin and bones. He admitted to being involved in poaching of tigers in the PTR. A few members of the gang that assisted Mondal have been missing. Officials have been on their trail.

Only recently, foresters received a tip-off that two men of the gang had resumed poaching activities in Pilibhit. The forest security officer immediately raided the house of the suspects and arrested them. Since the forest department is still getting to the bottom of the case, the names of the men arrested have been withheld.

District forest officer Kailash Prakash told TOI, “We arrested two people suspected to be involved in poaching in PTR. We are trying to find remains of the animals they have poached. We are still interrogating the men to find out the names of others involved in the crime, so we will divulge their names once the probe is over.”
