Pilibhit’s Nehru Energy Park cries for attention

Jul 15, 2015

PILIBHIT: Nehru Energy Park, spread over 2 acres in Pilibhit city’s upscale Civil Lines area, is in a shambles today. The park was to be developed by the forest department but they have apparently paid scant attention to it. The park has no gardener or a security guard and a skeleton support staff. All that can be seen is an unfinished fountain. During the rains, the area gets water-logged as there is no drainage system. Residents living in the neighbourhood find it convenient to dump garbage in the park area. The drains of some houses also empty out in the park.

The dirty pond and dustbins brimming with rain water for breeding mosquitoes adds to the dismal picture. According to locals, a campaign was launched earlier this year to clean up the park by some youth clubs. Social forestry officials took upon themselves the task of painting the walls and putting up a welcome board. However, the promise to repair the pond, opening a canteen, building a nursery and putting a tag on every plant with its name and the name of the respective scientists is still remains incomplete. Officials said a budget of Rs 5.99 lakh was sanctioned against a proposal of Rs 86 lakh. However not much improvement was done apart from painting the wall. On being contacted, director, social forestry, Adarsh Kumar told TOI, “Due to lack of manpower and budget, the renovation of the park is still incomplete. We will organize a meeting soon with the DM and other officials to discuss the conditions of the park.”
